Episode 22: How to Simplify Your Content Creation with B-Roll

Hello, Hello, everyone, and welcome back to the six figure systems podcast. Today we are going to be talking about a hot topic called b roll. I'm going to explain first and foremost what b roll is. Then I'm going to give you some quick tips on how I use b roll. And I've used b roll since I would say, like October of last year to make my content batching really simple and easy. And of course, I'm going to be including a download for you to utilize today for ten different ideas for you to do B roll by yourself, and ten different ideas for you to do b roll with a partner. So, uh, today, with that being said, let's get started with what is b roll? B roll. I thought for the longest time that B roll was behind the scenes role because it kind of, that's kind of what it alludes to. But I. B roll is a term that was used in videography when filmmaking. And a roll would be like the character looking at the, um, script, it would be like very much like reading what was going on in the, um, filmmaking. And b roll was essentially like things that were going on behind the scenes. It was secondary role that could be used to add in to make some visual, more visually appealing kind of film making. So anyone who's a filmmaker, don't judge my lack of, uh, expertise, but I would explain to you that b roll is something that I have been using for my social media content and I think would be so helpful for you all to start using, too. Now, b roll can be clips of you while you're traveling. It could be pictures of you while you are working at your desk. It could be you interacting with a colleague. It could be you speaking in front of people. That's what b roll is. You've probably seen this utilized fair amount within reels. A lot of times people will include B roll and they'll have the b roll going. And then what they'll do is they will put text over top of, uh, the b roll. So, for instance, it could be like me reading a book just so leisurely and then have some words across the screen. That's what B roll is. So, first and foremost, B roll is something that is extremely user friendly. And one of the trends that we've been seeing with the algorithm in this year is that people's attention spans are fairly short. So what you are seeing is a lot of these, I call them like, medium form content, which are like the minute to a two minute long content that isn't getting as many views as, uh, something that is like four to 10 seconds. That's short form content that you can provide with B roll. So let's say you've got a lot to share about a topic and you could go on talking about it for like a solid minute, minute and a half. What you want to utilize B roll for is taking the highlights from that and posting about that on short form video content like reels, TikToks or YouTube shorts. So, uh, for me, the way I utilize B roll is I like to think about what are the things that my business stands for, what is the big mess messaging that I get behind my business, what is my content that will be inspirational and aspirational for my client. And then I also like to post tips and tools, trainings, mini journal prompts and things like that. And B roll can be used for both. It can also be used for client testimonials as well. So when I am batching my content, what I like to do is I like to get all of my videos filmed ahead of time. And then every week, the Friday before, I like to write the actual copy or wording for the captions. So that's the kind of like way the system that I have for my marketing and that's what I utilize for batching. Now, when I was batching content last year, before October, I would take a ton of time and I would think through this beautiful, well thought script about something I could say that could be really helpful for people. And I would sit during that hour and a half of my week when I did my content batching, and I would record me speaking for a minute to a minute and a half for each topic. And that is great, but that took a long time. And what happened is I also, because it was a longer form content, even in the real YouTube and shorts and um, TikTok space. What I found, um, is that it was getting less views when I started doing shorter form content, like five to 7 seconds or four to 10 seconds, thinking about, okay, what is this topic? What am I going to say for this? And just having a super quick small video, it made my life so much easier. So when I was thinking about doing my content, I was able to break it apart and think about, okay, what are the aspects of my business, six figure systems that are for my audience? That's just finding me. I like to find colleagues define these people as my old leads. These are people who have never had experience, they've never heard from me, they've never really talked with me. I like to utilize for that form of content. I like to use b roll that signifies my bigger mission and my purpose behind six figure systems. So my bigger purpose and my mission with this company is to create work life balance for entrepreneurs. So when I'm creating b roll for my cold audience, my new people who are just coming to me, I use snippets from my travels. I'll have a video of me at like Lake Como, which I went to with my mom this summer. I'm about to go to Paris on Thursday with my grandmother, where I'm going to get a bunch of videos there. I'm going to roam in September with my, um, coaching friends later in September. So I'm doing a bunch of big trips. I'm going to Disney in November with my amazing fiance and his family. I am going to, um, Charlotte in December. I have trips pretty much every month, which speaks to the benefits of systems. It's definitely like one of the reasons why lots of people come m to me. And so I try and do a b roll shot, which is a, again, a little bit behind the scenes of me traveling because it speaks to the benefits of my clients. One. So I want you to think about what are the benefits of working with you? What are the benefits of your service? And how can you include a snippet of what you do in your regular life that speaks to that piece of things? Again, for me, it's work life balance is what systems create. So I include videos of me traveling because that's what you create when you have work life balance. The second piece are things that are like tips and tricks. These are things that are the, um, um, like three reasons you should blank three ways to make this easier. Um, um. Five steps. Edit two journal prompts like one quote to change the game. This week, I want you to think about what are the things that you provide as a service provider. They give people a little taste of what you do. Give people like an appetizer in a mini transformation. That is what you're going to do for your warm leads. These are people who have been a part of your audience, and they want to be like, they really want to get to like you. So the cold leads, they want to get to know you a little bit more. The warm leads, they want to like you. And so with those cold leads, what you want to, or the warm leads, what you want to do is you want to provide something that's valuable, give them a little value ahead of time. For instance, this post, this podcast is going to be translated into a post where I'm going to give people a download to this b roll, all these different b roll prompts and ideas and examples of each. So that's something that you can start doing as well. Now, for those kind of content, I think about, okay, instead of being aspirational and inspirational like I do with my first reel of the week, what I like to do is I like to think about, okay, what is something that is posting me in an experience of expertise? How can I show people that I am an accomplished, like, business owner and I can teach them how to do the same? And that's where I'll provide a lot of content of me behind the scenes. I might be, um, having me doing some, uh, sitting with a coffee cup, journaling, recording a podcast. All those things are b roll. And if you just, like, prop up your phone, you can get that in the day to day. People want to see behind the scenes. They want to see a little glimpse into your life. And then the text that you put over it is related to the service you provide. It's giving them that mini transformation. So they'll either read the caption or you can put them, if it's something like, you can put them on top of, uh, overlaying it on your b roll already. So then you've got that, like, platform for people, which is pretty exciting. So those are ways that I use b roll to make my content batching so much easier. I will literally go in at the beginning of the month, and I'll just go travel business, travel business, travel business, and I just go through and I have all that content. And then throughout the month or in one short period, I will either change clothes really quickly and film some behind the scenes for that b roll, or I will record it throughout the course of, uh, time, especially with the traveling and things like that. That's where I will typically, like, record that on a trip and then translate it to my b roll that I have later on. But batching b roll can be extremely easy. Just have a couple of outfits, uh, out, trade it out, get your outfit going and record you drinking a cup of coffee, record you going on a walk, record you journaling, whatever kind of things that your audience needs to see from behind the scenes. If you are like, another instance of that is if you can get a friend to do this with you, it is huge. And let's say that you are talking with them, you're engaging with them, you're holding up. Let's say you are a personal stylist. You can hold up clothes, you can go through that, you include snippets if you do Zoom calls with them, you can include like a behind the scenes of a zoom call. All of those different kinds of things are ways that you can utilize b roll to make your content batching easier. So like I said, what I'll do is I'm going to put in the, uh, comments of this a download so that you can get ten ideas for b roll that you can do by yourself with literally a tripod. Or I even have a tripod to begin with. I just prop up my phone and record behind the scenes when I was working. So don't even need a tripod. And you can, uh, I'll also include ten ideas that you can do with a partner. And as a bonus, I'm going to include two different things that you can do in front of a group. If you can get yourself in a group of people, if you do presentations, if you do like a networking event, all those things can be utilized for your content. Make your marketing so much easier and you'll be able to get all of that done in half the time. And you're probably going to get more likes on your reels, which is really exciting. So if you have any questions about broll, feel free to reach out. Definitely download the broll template and the um, b roll examples and I will be seeing.
